Wooden silhouettes with painted scenes, 2025

The installation Echoes of Play explores how children in the Netherlands have played throughout the years. Four wooden silhouettes depict recognizable moments of play: two boys playing football, a child on a space hopper, a child sledding, and a child balancing an egg on a spoon. All scenes are based on family photographs from the makers. Because of this, the work feels both personal and familiar. The silhouettes make the images appear almost timeless, while the painted scenes bring them back to life. Echoes of Play invites viewers to reflect on their own memories of play and how some forms of play, no matter how simple, never truly change.
